Mvuthu and Gwanda High Schools have emerged victorious at the provincial National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) volleyball championships. The event, held at Usher High School on July 11th and 12th, saw Mvuthu win the girls’ category and Gwanda triumph in the boys’ category. These championships followed a vigorous month of district qualifiers in June. The competition featured strong teams from various districts, including Singwango and Wanezi from Insiza, Tongwe from Beitbridge, Manama from Gwanda South, Gwanda, Mtshabezi, and Colleen Bawn from Gwanda North, Mqabuko from Matobo, and Dombodema from Bulilima.

The boys’ group stages saw surprising results, with Mqabuko defeating both Wanezi and Manama with identical 2-0 scores. In the girls’ section, Usher, Gwanda, Singwango, and Mvuthu advanced to the semi-finals, demonstrating their prowess. Usher defeated Gwanda, while Mvuthu overcame Singwango. Mvuthu then clinched the title by beating the host team, Usher, 2-1. In the boys’ semi-finals, the surprise package, Mqabuko lost to Tongwe, and Gwanda beat Colleen Bawn. The final was an exhilarating match, with Gwanda narrowly defeating Tongwe 2-1.
Both Mvuthu and Gwanda High Schools will now represent Matabeleland South in the upcoming NASH National Schools Volleyball Championships to be hosted by Mutare Girls and Boys High Schools.
