Beitbridge Eagles faced a baptism of fire in Week 1 of the Zimbabwe Premier Volleyball League, managing only a single point from a challenging opening campaign. Their first match against Masvingo’s Titans showed promise. The Eagles fought valiantly, pushing the match to a thrilling five-setter. Despite losing 3-2, they secured a valuable point — a glimmer of hope to begin their campaign.
However, that glimmer quickly faded as they encountered formidable opposition from Matabeleland North and Bulawayo provinces. In their next game, the Eagles squared off against Shalom Ballers. The tightly contested match was halted due to poor lighting with Ballers leading 2-1. When play resumed in the rescheduled fixture, the Eagles seemed drained of momentum, suffering a straight-sets defeat (3-0).

There was little respite as they went on to face another Matabeleland North giant — the Crocs. The Crocs proved too powerful and clinical, dispatching Beitbridge in three swift sets. A final clash with Chimoio, representing Bulawayo province, added to the Eagles’ woes. Once again, they fell 3-0, failing to find rhythm or resistance against a technically superior side.
Eagles captain, Peula, admitted that while the results were disappointing, the matches exposed key areas for improvement. “To us it’s an experience we can never feel proud of because although it’s part of the game we should have fought harder to win all our games.” he said.
Beitbridge Eagles will look to regroup and bounce back in Week 2, with lessons learned and pride on the line. The full match can be watched on the MSVA Youtube page, link given below.
