Gwanda – The Victoria Falls and Bulawayo based volleyball clubs, Crocs and Chimoio, emerged victorious in the men and women’s section, respectively, of the MSVA Opening Tournament held in Gwanda on February 15. This marked a historic moment as it was the first time a club from Matabeleland North participated in a tournament in Matabeleland South.

Originally scheduled for Mtshabezi, the games were moved to Gwanda due to unfavorable weather conditions. Eight teams competed in the men’s section, while three teams battled it out in the women’s category.

Crocs dominated the men’s section, claiming the championship title. Chimoio from Bulawayo province secured second place, with Beitbridge Eagles finishing third as the best-performing team from Matabeleland South. Other local teams, including Mtshabezi Titans, Gwanda Spikers, Colleen Bawn, and Plumtree, struggled to keep up with the competition. In the women’s section, Chimoio clinched first place, followed by Lycans from Bulawayo in second, and Gwanda Spikers in third.

Chimoio and Lycans were awarded with certificates of recognition with regards to their contribution in the development of women’s volleyball in Matabeleland South.

The tournament was praised for its flawless officiating, led by Lungisani Moyo, who ensured fair play throughout the event. “This was a great opportunity for teams from different regions to compete and showcase their talent,” said Moyo. “The level of competition was impressive, and we hope to see more inter-provincial tournaments in the future.”

The victory by Crocs has sparked excitement in Matabeleland North, with fans hopeful for more success in upcoming tournaments, especially the Zimbabwe Open Tournament that is going to be held in Mutare in April. Meanwhile, Matabeleland South teams are reflecting on their performance and vowing to come back stronger. “We may not have won, but we’ve learned a lot,” said a spokesperson for Beitbridge Eagles. “This experience will help us improve and prepare for the next challenge.”

The MSVA Opening Tournament has set the stage for an exciting volleyball season, with fans eagerly anticipating the next showdown.
