Gwanda district volleyball triumphs in Matabeleland South Youth games

The inaugural Matabeleland South Youth Games, officially known as the Ministry of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Youth Games, concluded in Gwanda with spectacular performances from four participating districts. The games, held from August 1 to August 3, featured under-20 athletes competing in volleyball, soccer, netball, athletics, and boxing.

In the men’s volleyball category, Gwanda District emerged victorious, winning all their matches. They defeated Beitbridge and Mzingwane with identical 2-0 scorelines, securing the tournament title. Beitbridge claimed second place after beating Mzingwane 2-0.

The women’s volleyball competition saw Gwanda District dominate once again. Gwanda defeated Beitbridge and Insiza with 2-0 scorelines and overcame Mzingwane 2-1. Insiza finished second after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mzingwane. Insiza placed third, while Beitbridge ended in fourth place. Lubelihle Nyathi of Gwanda District received the individual award for best attacker in the women’s category.

The successful event showcased the region’s young athletic talent and fostered a spirit of camaraderie among the districts.
